Joelle Mason

Hello, my name is Joelle and I am studying Human Resources here at Bow Valley College. Academic achievement and engagement in student life comprise my college experiences. Before being elected as Vice President of Operations, I was one of twelve elected student council members, a representative on Bow Valley’s Academic Council, as well as a volunteer on three student committees and the Human Resource Student/Industry Networking committee. I also facilitate study groups for students for classes only offered online to help achieve student success in online courses

I am passionate about traveling and have visited over twenty countries. Bali and Australia were my favourite places. Some sports I play are ultimate frisbee, soccer curling and tennis. I moved to Calgary three years ago from a small town in British Columbia. I enjoy listening to music and often go to concerts. My favourite thing to do on the weekend is to go out for a coffee and visit a farmer’s market.

In a recent book that I read, it discussed how companies can go from ordinary, to extraordinary. The characteristics of the leaders in charge of these organizations possessed qualities that you may not expect. The book characterized them as “Level 5 Leaders: These leaders channel their ego needs away from themselves and into the larger goal of building a great company. They are incredibly ambitious-but their ambition is first and foremost for the institution, not themselves.”  (Collins, 2001, pg. 21). This quote encapsulates my feelings of what I believe is an integral quality for being a great leader and what I will remember on my journey as Vice President of Operations.
