October 6th to 12th is Mental Illness Awareness Week - Addressing the Mental Health Crisis - Barriers, Stigma, and Solutions

The theme for 2024 is "Access for All: Time for Action, Time for Change". According to Stats Canada, 18% of Canadians over the age of 15 have met the diagnostic criteria for a mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder in 2022. This number has been steadily on the rise, but many people living with mental illness have substantial barriers preventing them from seeking treatment for themselves. Some areas can see wait times of up to 2.5 years for mental health services, according to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. Additionally, marginalized communities can face even more barriers and stigma, which can lead to higher rates of suicide or substance use in those communities. An example of this, from the Canadian Mental Health Association, can be seen in 2SLGBTQIA+ youth, who face 14 times the risk of suicide and substance use in comparison to their cis-gendered, heterosexual peers.

If you or someone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide or a mental health crisis, please contact any one of the following services:

The Students' Association of Bow Valley College is located on the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot Confederacy) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuut’ina and the Iyarhe Nakoda.

We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, and the traditional Blackfoot name of this place is “Mohkinstsis” which we now call the City of Calgary.

The City of Calgary is also home to Métis Nation of Alberta, Region 3.
